CUANTO CUESTA VIAJAR A TAILANDIA?

- HOW MUCH A TRIP TO THAILAND COST? -

With this post we are going to start a serie of practical posts describing how much cost some of the trips we have done.  So we will begin detailing how much a trip to Thailand cost. And also in the future posts we will do the same with the trips to Cuba, New York, Marrakech, and so on.

Answer this question in all case if not possible, because there are many differences between travelling as a backpacker or in top luxury hotels, or having availability to travel in all the dates or just in high season, because the flight prices are very different. There are also many price differences if we can prepare the travel in a fast way or with many time, since you can take advantage of the flight offers, as we already explained in previous posts about Booking and Skyscanner. So we are going to describe it  for something in the middle, giving prices of typical holidays organized with time enough to be able to get offers, but in our case we use to do these travels in high season, when are on work  vacation. About the hotels we use to stay in comfortable hotels and sometimes in luxury ones, so we could say an average of four stars, also depending on the destination.

Focusing on Thailand, we will write about how much money you can spend in a trip of 18 days visiting 3 different zones: Bangkok, Chiang Mai (the northern jungle) and the Gulf Islands (beach zone). We will describe the full route in a next post. Now we are going to start with the flights. In our case, we take a flight from Malaga (with stop in Istanbul) but the prices are similar from other spanish big  airports such as Madrid or Barcelona. For high season the flights usually are from 600€, although you can find offers for 500 or around, normally the cost is around 650€ with razonable timetable for example on August.

In addition, in order to move in Thailand, the plane is a good option and sometime cheap. For example, to go to Chiang Mai from Bangkok, it costs around 60€, but to go to the islands, since the airport is private the flights' price use to be high. We took a plan from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui for 210€ and from Koh Samui to return back to Bangkok for 130€. Then, 650€ for an international flight plus 400€ for local flights, total 1050€, so in fights you can spend around 2100€ for two people. Of course, there are several options to travel, train to go to the north, bus plus ship to the islands. But after evaluating them, we considered we could lost a lot of time with these other options, and they did not look very comfortable. Also another option is to go to the other beach zone (Phuket or Krabi) where the flights usually are cheaper, but since on August is temporal weather (and in these other zones it affects more), so it was much safe to have better weather in the islands, and we did not have any problem.

We continue with the hotels with, taking advantage in Thailand the accommodation is really cheap, we stayed in luxury hotels for a reasonable price which we could allow and normally in other travels is not so cheap. Also we booked several offers in Booking  reserving in advance and checking the prices' changes as we already explained in this post

In Bangkok we stayed 3 nights at the beginning of the trip and 2 nights at the end. These 5 nights in Bangkok cost around 70€ per night. Estuvimos en el Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn, with an infinity pool in the terrace, big rooms and a super breakfast.

In Chiang Mai we stayed 3 nights in the Rachamankha Hotel Chiang Mai for 85€ per night. This is a boutique hotel with a beautiful pool but we think it was too rural (even a big careless) for the price, since in Chiang Mai you could find hotels cheaper.

In the Gulf Islands, we stayed first where we landed, in Koh Samui 1 night in the Hotel Tango Luxe for 133€. A good price to be a hotel close to the airport and with very luxury rooms with pool inside. Then, in Koh Tao we stayed 3 nights in the Haadtien Beach Resort for 120€ per nightWe describe this hotel in this post because it was in the next beach in which we had been there.  After we stayed in the more luxury hotel in which we have been ever, the Anantara Rasananda in Koh Phangan 3 nights for 280€ per night. It is too much, but it deserved, with pool inside the room, all the possible luxuries, infinity pool and a total relax. Finally, we stayed 2 nights more in Koh Samui in the Hotel Fair House Villas & Spa for 135€ per night, with jacuzzi in the terrace and a nice beach considering in Koh Samui the beaches are not so good.

In summary, 2500€ for two people in hotels with double rooms with breakfast. Of course, this quantity can be a lot less if you stay in more regular hotel and also good, but we decided go for this luxury hotels, although you can go for the half price also with comfort.

And now we are going to talk about excursions, visits to museums, adventures, etc. No giving many details, since it depends on what and how you can organize the activity, but giving approximate prices of the typical things.

For example, the visits to the temples in Bangkok are not very expensive, from 1-2€ (as the Wat Pho or the Wat Arun) for 12€ (as the Real Palace). And then Ayutthaya with return trip in the same day from Bangkok in a shared Van for 2€ per person and there you can rent a tuk tuk for 3-4 hours for 10€.

In Chiang Mai, to go to see the Mork Fa waterfall, the temple of Doi Suthep and the Tiger Kingdom you can rent a taxi for around 30€ all day. And, in addition the visit to Tiger Kingdom (which we show in this post) was 47€ each, so it is not an economical price. There were different packages according the number and age of the tigers you want to visit, and we selected the package including tigers of all ages. An the experience with the elephants was even more expensive. As we already knew about the abuse the elephants suffer in this country, we decided to do a very special activity in the Elephant Nature Park, as we describe in this post, which was 150€ each, but it was fantastic. In the islands there is another excursion in ship very recommendable to the National Park Marino Angthong for 30€ each.

On the other hand, we take advantage to enjoy the wonderful thai massages each time we could, all types, luxury ones in hotels (with better prices than the massages in Europe) or massages in the feet in the street (almost free!). In this we spent around 170€ in 5 massages).

In total in this king of visits we spent around 700€ both, considering more than half was for the elephants.

As regards the food, it is difficult to have an average price since it is possible to eat really cheap (dishes for 2 euros) in small places where the local people eats. And this is what we recommender than famous restaurant with european prices, since we enjoyed the best pad thais, rices and soups in the local places. We went to some restaurants about what we will talk in another post, and also we ate in some of the restaurant of the resorts in the islands. Also we tried all what we could (with nice aspect) in the street, markets and small places.  We really enjoy of this kind of places and food when we travel, since you can be more coupled and know their culture. More or less we spent around 500€ in food and drinks, more beers than wines, since the price of wines were too much and no so quality (maybe this is one of the only defaults in Thailand).

Besides you have to add the local transport prices, taxis from the airports to the hotels, ferris to go to the islands or tuk tuks for moving inside the cities.

In Bangkok also there is metro and we took it when we could because it was very cheap, although to come-go to the airport we prefer taxi around 10€ per each way. In the rest of ways in Bangkok or Chiang Mai the taxis or tuk tuk may cost around 2 euros (always you can negotiate the price before take the taxi).

In the islands is different and the taxis are more expensive (around 10€) and from the airport to the hotel can be even more. Mainly if you want a car in a "good condition" so we always used the service that the resorts provide, sometimes is free and other times with extra cost, that in one of the cases was 30€ each way.

Lastly, the Ferries between islands, we take them with the company Lomprayah and the ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Tao was around 15€, from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan also 15€ and from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui around 8€. The good thing is that in some cases they provide you the free transfer from the hotel to the port or viceversa.

Taking into account all this, in local transport we spent around 200€.

In summary, how much cost a travel to Thailand for two people in high season and staying in good hotels with avoid other expenses like visits, transport and food: 2100€ flight (international + local) + 2500€ hotels (4 & 5 stars) + 700€ excursions and visits (including 300€ in the elephant experience) + 500€ foo (in some expensive restaurants, cheap local or street places) + 200€ local transport (taxis, tuk tuk, ferries, metro) = 6000€,

But as we said this amount can be reduced avoiding some things, as going to cheaper hotels or taking other kind of transport instead to planes and taxis. Without losing too much comfort a more modest trip could cost around 4000€, for instance. If additionally you can go in low season, it could cost easily 3000€. And if you go as a backpacker the price will be reduced a lot!

We were forgetting, the shopping!! Well, this is optional, but we think it is not easy to avoid, although we haven't added it to the final budget ;-) On one hand, the price of the things you can buy in markets (t-shirts, souvenirs, etc) is very very cheap. You can buy 20 items and pay 30€. On the other hand, the counterfeits is different, because if they are good they have normal prices, that's means that a counterfeit bag can cost as a leather bag without being of any famous brand here. So, for that you must count with extra money.

And finally, a tip about the currency in Thailand and where to change the money. It is needed because although in the hotel and restaurants you can pay with credit card, for the rest you will have to change in Thai bath (100 TBH are about 2.5€). We found a money exchange much cheaper than the rest, SuperRich. Strangely they have office in the airport but not where other money exchange, with excessive fees, are placed if not down in the Airport rail link, in a small but very recomendable stand. We changed a part for the money when we arrived and as we knew we would come back a couple of time more, we changed later the rest.

  2. Hola.
